victorSix people are dead and over 100 people now homeless after a cyclone hit the Solomon Islands yesterday.

Another 18 people have been treated in hospital for minor injuries, with over 20 houses destroyed in Honiara. Several other buildings have sustained significant structural damage.

Police say that of the six people who died, three men drowned when their car was blown off the road into a river, and two women and a man were struck by flying debris.

Dubbed “Victor” by the Nadi Weather Centre meteorologists who detected the rapidly developing cyclone near Naura at 2 a.m. yesterday morning, the cyclone saw winds in Honiara reach over 140 kilometres per hour before tracking into the Coral Sea at midday.

Emergency services say Honiara has been the worst affected as they await news from outlying districts, as the clean up operation begins.
